Ruth Michaelson is a journalist based in Istanbul, covering life across the Middle East, the environment, and tech.
I’m a journalist who has been based in the Middle East since 2012. I spent over five years in Cairo, and have been living in Turkey since 2021. I have covered everything from life in autocratic regimes to the risk of Gulf states running out of water, but above all I am most interested in telling a compelling story that gets readers paying attention to an unusual topic.
My work is mainly published in the Guardian, where I cover Turkey and the wider Middle East, especially North Africa and the Gulf.
I’ve also written for Bloomberg Businessweek, TIME, the Columbia Journalism Review, Coda Story, Smithsonian Magazine, the New Statesman, Monocle, and many of your other favourite magazines and websites.
I’m a frequent contributor to Monocle24 and Deutsche Welle, and a former correspondent for France 24 in Cairo.
